Background

‘‘Tokumma’ in Boran Language (spoken exclusively in southern Ethopia, widly in Northern Kenya, and to lesser degree in North-Eastern Kenya) means ‘Oneness’.
Tokumma serves to bring together families and individuals who are originally from this vast Region and domiciled in Britain.

The birth of the organisation is significantly linked to the demise of a leading author of its idea/ideals, the late Hussein Godana Damballa who advocated the founding a body that will look after the welfare of people from The Region. His passing on that Saturday (May 19th 2007) galvanised people (those present and those away) and spurred them into founding the organisation at his home in Newport amidst the preparation underway to intern him to Nairobi. In the subsequent months the body was registered with Directors who are signatories to the Bank Account and a Co-ordinator for its activities.

The gathering envisaged that Tokkuma goes beyond life and death matters and embraces quality if life issues too; that just as members grieve for loss together, so too should they celebrate for life in unison (hence Annual Summer Get-together); that while striving to be strong in order to assist needy among members, they also endeavour to grant support to the needs of those back at home
