Children and Youth:
We believe that the family is the fundamental group of society and the natural environment for the growth and well-being of all its members and particularly children. We seek support to provide the necessary protection and assistance so that it can fully assume its responsibilities within the community. In this regard Tokkuma fully commits itself to fight against Anti-social behaviours stemming from use/abuse of drugs, alcohol and other harmful substances by applying its cultural values, religious belief tempered with British national etiquette and abiding to recommended school ethos.
Young people from minority ethnic groups generally, and those of our members who have recently settled in the UK specifically, may be experiencing a combination of linked problems such as low educational attainment, limited aspirations, poor skills. Quite often they do not access mainstream youth services due to lack of awareness of what is available, lack of self-confidence, and a fear that they would not be able to integrate into mainstream culture. Tokkuma’s strategy is to take active steps to find out barriers that exist to young people accessing services and opportunities including social, education, health, leisure and youth. Our programmes will support young people by involving them and the families in identifying ways and means of building their skills, knowledge and confidence to grow and become responsible, enterprising and productive youth citizens.
Tokkuma also endeavours to extend help to families and wider communities in the Home Region to educate children. There is a cardinal duty to marshal any assistance possible to rescue, instead of watching them dropping out of schools and sliding (or being trafficked) into prostitution, child labour, child soldier etc. Exploring opportunities for bursaries to assist the bright kids from most disadvantaged families to fulfil their maximum potential is the most critical way of ‘giving back’. We recognise that in all countries in the world, there are children living in exceptionally difficult conditions, and that such children need special consideration. But we are also all too conscious that our Region is the neediest among the ranks of developing countries (with all the recurrent droughts/famine, persistent conflict/wars, disease, lack of basic infrastructure etc.) and deserves the assistance of international community.
Networking and Promoting Tokkuma within Britain
Members intend to develop and promote the identity of Tokkuma as an umbrella organisation with various organisations and groups throughout UK to highlight the essence of equality, diverse representation, capacity building and social inclusion in addition to its other objectives. Our national liaison and networking strategy should be paired with an adopted twin approach. One, that “help available” is simply not enough!, And two, that we seek out those who are in need of help – not wait for them to come!
Tokkuma will be working towards strengthening the capacity of the black and ethnic minority voluntary sector, raise its profile and ensure issues of concern are raised with relevant bodies including local authorities, public agencies, training bodies and funding organisations, lead on policy issues and debates that are of interest and concern to national level.
